Joep van Malsen (born in 1998) is a freelance Recording & Mixing Engineer, working mainly at E-Sound Studio’s in Weesp. In addition, he is also the Assistant Engineer of Gijs van Klooster, located at Sound City Amsterdam. Joep van Malsen’s journey as an audio engineer has been enriched by a diverse tapestry of clients, which allowed him to adapt to a wide range of musical genres and already work with esteemed artists, including Hania Rani, Douwe Bob, and Jeangu Macrooy, among numerous others.

His story begins with a simple yet profound fascination with music when he enrolled in a DJ course. As Joep delved deeper into the world of music, his interest expanded beyond DJing. He embarked on a journey of music production, exploring the intricacies of crafting his own sonic landscapes by experimenting across genres.

Joep’s dedication led him to the Herman Brood Academy. Surrounded by like-minded artists and guided by experienced mentors, he honed his skills and delved deeper into the world of composition. It was during this period that Joep stumbled upon the works of Joep Beving, a pianist and composer who would profoundly influence his musical journey.

Inspired by Beving’s emotive piano compositions, Joep embarked on a personal exploration of the instrument. With determination, he embraced the piano’s expressive potential, intertwining his roots in electronic music with its timeless elegance. This unique fusion of genres allowed Joep to create a unique and mesmerizing sonic fusion.

In his quest for musical inspiration, Joep also encountered the awe-inspiring works of Nils Frahm. Frahm’s ability to seamlessly blend classical and electronic elements left quite an impact on Joep, further fueling his passion for experimentation and pushing the boundaries of sound. This encounter deepened Joep’s interest in audio engineering, as he sought to unravel the intricacies of sound manipulation and capture the nuances of his own compositions.

He decided to study audio engineering, delving into the intricacies of sound design, recording and mixing. Seeking real-world experience, Joep secured an invaluable two-year internship at E-Sound Studios, where he refined his skills under the guidance of experienced professionals.

As Joep’s proficiency grew, while working as a freelance audio engineer, he found himself working alongside esteemed producer Gijs van Klooster, known for his collaboration with the very artist who had ignited Joep’s passion—Joep Beving, bridging his musical roots with the captivating projects that initially inspired him.

His portfolio encompasses a vast array of artists from various genres, each bringing unique challenges and opportunities. From 20-piece big bands to intimate acoustic acts, Joep’s adaptability as an audio engineer shines through.
